Bob and Brooke Corlett
Let’s face it, when you are a job seeker, you get a lot of well meaning, but terrible advice – mostly from the people who love you most – your friends and family. Even after I was working in the executive search business for over a decade, I still got regular career advice (unsolicited) from my mother-in-law…but that’s another story.
As search firm insiders, we know how the hiring process works, and more importantly, how it does NOT work. So, in this blog we want to pass along some of the most realistic, practical advice we’ve heard – advice that you could easily miss in the sea of misinformation about job seeking. Some posts are our own perspective, but many others will be from smart people who we think are telling it like it really is.
We don’t have a profit making agenda with this blog. Employers pay our fees, not job seekers. We don’t want to sell you career counseling, outplacement services, or resume writing. Astonishingly, we don’ t even have a book we want you to buy. We just want to improve your job hunting experience – whether you are working with us on one of our searches, or not. (But seriously, check out some of those great searches we’re working on, surely you must know somebody who would be perfect, right?)
So who are we and why does this blog exist? I’ve worked in executive search since 1989. in 2002 I started my own search firm – Staffing Advisors. We’ve started with email newsletters for our clients, and then we developed a blog to share best practices with our clients. Not content to leave well enough alone, and being, perhaps, just a tad obsessive about improving the job seeker experience, we started this blog, and then a Facebook page, and of course we got on to Twitter, and really, heaven knows what’s next after that.
My co-conspirator on this project is my daughter Brooke, and this blog would never have occurred without her hard work and terrific editing. I just find and recommend blog posts and articles that make sense to me, and Brooke pulls it all together for you.
We want to be helpful to you, so please write feel free to comment on the posts. Tell us what you need, or what challenges you are facing. We promise to do our level best to find and share the information you need. Because if you have a question, you can bet that someone else out there has the same question.
